Miniature Donkeys

Miniature donkeys love children

The Miniature Mediterranean donkey originates from Sardinia and Sicily, and despite its small size was used to carry loads and turn mill stones. It is not a standard donkey bred down, but a breed in its own right. If you are looking for a miniature donkey for sale, visit our For Sale page, or contact us for latest foal information.

I have spent the last 13 days visiting Miniature Donkey breeders in the UK, Holland, and Belgium, and based on what I have seen I think your herd is outstanding

Although Miniature donkeys are now nearly extinct in Sardinia and Sicily, they are popular in America and Canada, which is where most of the stock in the UK has been imported from. In the 1920's an American called Roger Green imported a small herd into the USA. He is quoted as saying "Miniature donkeys possess the affectionate nature of a Newfoundland, the resignation of a cow, the durability of a mule, the courage of a tiger and an intellectual capability only slightly inferior to man's". We would certainly agree.

There are now at least 800 Miniature donkeys in the UK, but the number is rising steadily as people realise what super little animals they are. Whether you are looking for a faithful pet, something for a child to ride or an adult to drive or a wonderful show animal, a pair of Miniature donkeys could be the answer. (We always like our miniature donkeys to go in pairs, unless you already have donkeys.)

Miniature donkeys require similar care to a horse. They will need to be wormed and vaccinated regularly, to see the dentist and the farrier and to have their fields cleared of droppings. They do have a different temperament to a horse though, being more loyal, intelligent and affectionate. We think of our miniature donkeys as being great stress busters, since they love nothing more than having a big hug and a cuddle. It's sometimes hard to get your chores done when there is a Mini about demanding attention!

To be classified as a true Miniature donkey, an animal must be under 36" at the withers, but most in the UK are between 30-34". All our donkeys for sale are registered with the Miniature Mediterranean Donkey Association, and are recorded in the stud book where appropriate.

Here at Norley Farm we have a range of colours, from the traditional grey dun to the rarer sorrel, chocolate brown, black and coloured. Our For Sale page lists the most up to date details of miniature donkeys for sale.

In Dec 2007 my 2 Miniature donkey foals arrived after a long journey from Hampshire. They were remarkable and settled in very quickly. Annie had them leading well before they arrived, they were in good condition, had been well handled and were used to children. This gave them the confidence they needed to accept me and their new surroundings. They have not looked back.

Annie has been a constant support since the donkeys arrived, always making time to answer my questions and putting my mind at rest. I am pleased I chose Woodford Stud to start off my donkey ownership.
